In response to numerous food safety complaints in Bengaluru, the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) is set to overhaul the trade licence application process for eateries, incorporating explicit hygiene requirements. The current practices are informal and the new guidelines will enforce mandatory hygiene standards to get the licence.
The revamped process will require eateries to provide a washroom for workers, maintain better hygiene facilities, and ensure proper waste disposal. This change follows a complaint about a popular Indiranagar eatery lacking a washroom for its staff. The Chief Minister Office’s (CMO) Public Grievances Cell also highlighted poor food quality in some outlets, prompting the Food Safety Department and BBMP to take stricter actions against offenders. A recent state-wide crackdown revealed artificial colours and carcinogenic chemicals in food, causing concern among vendors and customers alike.
Many street food vendors in areas like Church Street, Indiranagar, and Koramangala have reported a drop in business due to these findings. Youngsters are calling for stricter regulations and monitoring.
