Microbes that feed on oil

Oil spills need not cause panic any longer! Scientists have suggested that oil spills could be cleaned up with the help of organisms that grow at the bottom of Lake Baikal in Siberia. According to the study, the microbes convert the crude oil into methane and other by-products, thereby preventing the spread of the oil through the lake.
