NEERI to discuss municipal waste management policies

After the launch of WTERT India, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Mumbai will be hosting seminars in Pune and Hyderabad in the near future to enable better solutions for municipal solid waste management in India. Brainstorming workshop for short term and long term solid waste management systems for big and small cities will be discussed in the subsequent meets.

Speaking to Clean India Journal, Dr Sunil Kumar, NEERI, said, “A concept paper will be prepared based on which a workshop will be organized in February next year in Hyderabad on Quality and Regulation. Waste Management and Waste Treatment policies related to Municipal Waste and issues related to Waste Water and Biomasswill be discussed at the workshop.

A study tour will also be conducted for professionals working in this field. Since data of waste characterization available at present is outdated, we will undertake a small survey project on 50,000 to one lakh population to find the waste characteristics.” Research, sampling and testing will be done on a project mode with the help of sponsoring agencies, municipalities, institutions, professionals and researchers in consultation with NEERI. NEERI is also in the process of hosting an International Conference on Green Technology for Waste Management.
