New green standards for laundry

To bring clarity on the recently published GS-51 “Standard for Laundry Care Products for Industrial and Institutional Use” Green Seal, the non-profit environmental certification organization has explained the new standard’s scope, regulatory and performance issue. Mark Petruzzi, Senior Vice President of Outreach & Strategic Relations for Green Seal said “GS-51 applies to all laundry care products used for industrial/institutional use.” There is also GS-48, specifically for household laundry care products.

Since the standard was unveiled few months ago, currently there aren’t any regulatory requirements for it. But it does have performance related requirements. Each product that earns the certificate should deliver satisfactory performance and meet comparable benchmarks for that product category. Green Seal’s goal with GS-51 is to allow purchasers to identify safer, environmentally preferable products; and the manufacturers of these products the opportunity to be recognized as leaders in their industry.

The original “Green Seal of Approval” was founded in 1989 to help safeguard the health of people and the planet. As an independent, science-based standards developer and certification body, Green Seal identifies products and services that are environmentally responsible, and provides public education for creating a more sustainable world.
