No to foreign waste

About 470 tonnes of municipal hazardous waste, stuffed in 20 containers from Greece and French-controlled Reunion Island and meant for a Sivakasi-based paper manufacturing company, landed at Thoothukudi port, Tamil Nadu. The waste included batteries, thermocol, aluminium foil packing material and bottles which cannot be processed as raw material for making paper. Customs officials have detained the goods and have initiated legal action against the importer.
