Protest against manual cleaning

Members of eight voluntary organisations and traders’ union recently staged a demonstration in front of the headquarters of Chennai Metrowater to protest against the manual cleaning of sewage manholes and septic tanks in the rural areas.

Following the death of a sanitary worker, the organisations came together and submitted a memorandum to the government officials to ban manual cleaning of sewer lines and septic tanks.

The representatives participated in the agitation also raised issues of rehabilitation, employment, education opportunities for the sanitary workers and their families besides curbing pollution of city waterways and rivers of the state and providing eco-friendly toilets in the rural areas.
