Solar Energy Saves Schools Money and Engages Students

Incorporating solar energy in schools is not only an environmentally conscious choice but also a financially savvy and educationally enriching decision. Transitioning to solar energy can significantly reduce electricity costs, enabling schools to redirect those funds toward educational improvements. Additionally, solar initiatives provide students with hands-on learning opportunities, fostering a deeper understanding of renewable energy and its benefits.

According to Evonne Waugh, Program Manager for Solar on Schools at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), Wisconsin, USA, solar energy offers unique educational possibilities. “Schools can have students regularly view modules monitoring data from their solar system, track system performance, make predictions, and even compare their system data with other schools,” Waugh explains. These activities not only enhance classroom learning but also encourage students to explore careers in renewable energy and educate their communities about the economic advantages of solar.

Successful solar initiatives require buy-in from all stakeholders, including leadership, operations teams, teachers, students, and parents. Engaging students in project planning not only enriches their learning experience but also garners broader community support. Waugh advises forming a diverse planning team to ensure a comprehensive strategy that addresses financial, instructional, and environmental impacts.

Solar energy not only helps schools save money but also aligns with their mission to foster social development, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship. By combining these elements, schools can create a robust case for adopting renewable energy while inspiring the next generation to lead a sustainable future.
