The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is planning a pilot project to recycle wastewater in view of the growing water shortage in the city and the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010. The project, which is expected to span over two years will involve secondary and tertiary level treatment of sewage once it has gone through the primary cleaning. The DJB also plans to keep a strict check on leakages and theft of water. Besides problems of water shortage, Delhi has approximately 1,600 unauthorised colonies with minimum or nil piped water supply and sanitation facilities. Available ground or piped water is used for washing and construction purposes, the effluents of which drain into the river, polluting the ground water tables. The agency which has already started technical trials at the Haiderpur water treatment plant, hopes to see a net gain of at least eight million gallons per day at the 200 million gallons per day plant.
