One of the most significant advancements in modern litter-picking technology is the transition from conventional lead-acid battery systems to Lithium-ion powered models. The Lithium-ion version of the Gobbler, India’s homegrown litter-picking machine developed by Cosmic Healers Private Limited offers a remarkable improvement in daily operational uptime compared to its older lead-acid counterparts.


While lead-acid models were often constrained by longer charging cycles and reduced battery longevity, the Lithium-ion variant delivers extended runtime of up to eight hours on a single charge, supported by fast-charging capabilities.

This translates into significantly fewer operational interruptions, greater area coverage per shift, and a substantially lower total cost of ownership making it a far more viable solution for large-scale municipal deployments.

Restoring Dignity

The recent deployment of 20 Gobbler units by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) under its ambitious Broom-Free City initiative has generated encouraging feedback, particularly regarding the dignity of labour for sanitation operators.

Rather than performing physically demanding and often stigmatised manual cleaning tasks, operators now work as skilled machine handlers, a shift that carries considerable social and psychological significance. Feedback from the field indicates that operators feel a heightened sense of professional pride and self-worth, as they are perceived as operators managing modern equipment rather than manual sweepers.

This transformation aligns closely with national goals of improving working conditions and recognising the invaluable contribution of frontline sanitation workers.

Next Frontier

Perhaps the most exciting frontier in urban sanitation is the integration of litter-picking machines with GPS-based tracking systems to generate real-time cleaning heatmaps for city administrators.

The Gobbler’s design is well-suited for such integration, enabling municipal authorities to monitor coverage patterns, identify high-litter zones, track machine deployment, and make data-driven decisions about resource allocation.

These digital heatmaps can reveal recurring litter hotspots, enabling targeted and proactive interventions rather than reactive cleaning.
