Power of Cleaning

Kurudampalayam Panchayat, 15km from here, is fast emerging as a model village in Tamil Nadu as far as cleanliness is concerned. The segregated household trash, including plastic, is collected right at the doors by the Panchayat workers.

At Kurudampalayam, no garbage bin can be seen on the streets or residential areas as the daily domestic trash is segregated right at homes. In this panchayat, the biogas is also generated from organic waste. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is also actively involved in generating power from trash in this Panchayat.

Two colour-coded bins, red and green, have been given to 9,600 households in 15 wards for dumping biodegradable and bio-non-degradable wastes. The Panchayat is also creating cash out of trash.

The household garbage is used for multiple purposes including creation of organic fertilizer and manure, which are suitable for agricultural purposes and yielding organic food.

The Panchayat is also planning for a bio-methanation plant in technical collaboration with the Technical Coordination Wing of BARC. The plant will process all vegetable and other organic waste generated by hotels, restaurants and households. The plant can process two tonnes of waste per day and generate gas to fill three cylinders of 14kg capacity each. BARC expects to set up nearly 50 plants in Tamil Nadu by the end of 2015.
