As hospitals race to adopt AI, robotics and digital diagnostics, true smartness lies in staying consistently safe and infection-free. Clean India Journal spoke to Prashant Sharma, Group Head – Facilities, Cloudnine Hospitals, on why maternity and neonatal care demands specialised housekeeping training over conventional cleaning.

Cloudnine specialises in maternal, neonatal and paediatric care, where labour rooms, operation Theatres, NICUs and postnatal wards call for exceptionally high environmental hygiene standards, since newborns and mothers are among the most vulnerable patient groups. Housekeeping associates undergo specialised training that goes beyond conventional cleaning — covering infection prevention protocols specific to maternity care, colour-coded cleaning systems, biomedical waste segregation, isolation cleaning and terminal cleaning procedures. “Every associate,” “is trained to understand the science behind cleaning rather than simply follow a checklist.”


Structured Team

Cloudnine does not outsource housekeeping to any external agency. “We rely on an in-house workforce of approximately 2,500 personnel.”

Each hospital follows a hotel-style hierarchy — an executive, three shift supervisors, and a team lead overseeing four hospitals, reporting up through a housekeeping head, regional manager and, finally, the facility head. “This brings the same discipline found in hospitality housekeeping to a clinical environment.”

Traditional visual inspections are no longer sufficient. Cloudnine now monitors compliance through “digital audits, QR-code-based inspections and real-time dashboards, shifting housekeeping from reactive supervision to proactive quality management, reinforced by environmental monitoring techniques such as ATP testing that give objective evidence of infection-prevention compliance rather than relying on appearance alone”.

“Rapid room availability without compromising infection control is one of the biggest operational challenges in maternity hospitals.” Every discharged room follows a structured workflow of waste removal, disposable linen replacement, surface disinfection, bathroom sanitisation and final supervisory clearance.

Disposable bed linen, he noted, has been a significant innovation here — eliminating risks from linen handling and transport, reducing laundry dependency, and speeding up bed preparation during high occupancy, with biomedical waste managed through strict segregation and authorised disposal.

Predictive Cleaning

Mechanised scrubbers, steam cleaning systems and ergonomic equipment are adopted only when they deliver measurable gains in efficiency and productivity. “Technology for its own sake is not the goal.”

Looking ahead, Prashant believes housekeeping’s future lies in prediction rather than reaction: Artificial Intelligence, IoT-enabled devices and occupancy-based scheduling will let hospitals identify cleaning needs before they affect patient experience, rather
than waiting for complaints or scheduled rounds.

What Matters

Housekeeping performance, Prashant said, should be tracked through meaningful Key Performance Indicators — room turnaround time, audit compliance scores, patient feedback and infection prevention indicators — reviewed consistently at leadership level.

“This is what turns housekeeping into a strategic contributor to hospital quality, rather than simply an operational service.”

Over the next five years, one can expect wider adoption of UV disinfection systems, autonomous scrubbers and AI-enabled command centres, though technology alone cannot create a safe hospital without trained professionals who understand clinical and patient sensitivities.
