Kerala Rolls out Eco-Friendly Bio-Bottles for Packaged Drinking Water
The Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (KIIDC), the largest producer of packaged drinking water in the government sector, has announced the launch of bio-bottles made from starch derived from renewable resources like corn and sugarcane. These innovative bottles, which closely resemble traditional plastic bottles, are transparent and designed to be fully biodegradable.
The biodegradable packaging, including the bottle cap and label, is set to decompose within six months when exposed to soil, offering a significant environmental advantage over conventional plastic. If incinerated, the bio-bottles will not contribute to environmental pollution, further enhancing their appeal as a greener alternative to plastic.
KIIDC has partnered with Kochi-based start-up 8 Specialists to develop and supply the raw materials for the production of these bio-bottles, which will use bio-foam technology provided by the start-up.
