The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in association with the Government of Assam has kicked off a clean-up drive at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, Assam. Advanced sweeping machines were distributed by Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during the launch.
The Kamakhya temple is among the 10 iconic places selected for cleaning in Phase 1 under the Swacch Bharat Mission. The others places selected in the pilot and demonstration phase include Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Ajmer (Rajasthan), Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai (Maharashtra), Golden Temple in Amritsar (Punjab), Jagannath Temple in Puri (Odisha), Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Meenakshi Temple in Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Taj Mahal in Agra (Uttar Pradesh), Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams in Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and Vaishno Devi in Katra (Jammu and Kashmir).
A monitoring committee will be appointed to oversee the progress. Assam is the first State to implement such a plan.
