In a significant move towards enhancing hygiene and passenger experience, Indian Railways has launched an AI-based quality inspection system at its mechanised laundry facility in Pune. This smart camera setup detects stains, tears, and incomplete cleaning on every piece of linen before it is packed for onboard use.
Unlike earlier manual inspections where only 2% of linens were checked, the AI system ensures 100% scanning accuracy, eliminating the risk of soiled or damaged bedsheets reaching passengers. Officials confirmed that this technology will be gradually implemented across other zonal laundries.
With millions of linens processed daily across the railway network, this innovation is expected to drastically improve quality control and bring uniformity in standards. The move also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of integrating automation, traceability and hygiene assurance in its service chain.
