Back to Basics Plastic to Stainless Steel

by Clean India Journal Editor

Seasoned marketing professional Prasad Sakharkar, Brand Manager and Marketing Strategist at FFServices, tells us why it is important to switch from disposable food service products in plastic to stainless steel, the corrosion-resistant alloy that is the inimitable tableware of choice across millions of Indians.

For us at FFServices, our commitment to sustainability and responsible operations is at the core of everything we do. We take great pride in our continuous efforts to minimize our environmental footprint while delivering exceptional service to our clients. One of the significant steps we have taken in this direction is our transition to using stainless steel cutlery across our food service operations, avoiding the use of disposable products. Currently the usage of disposable products such as paper cups or plates is less than 1%, which we will take to 0% soon.

Decision to Go Sustainable

When we evaluated our practices, consumption of such disposable products, its usage pattern, severe issues related to daily disposal practices and its overall impact on the environment, it became clear that the widespread use of disposable products, especially plastic & paper cutlery, was not in line with our long-term vision. Disposable cutlery, though cheap & absolutely convenient, contributes significantly to waste and environmental degradation. Most disposable products, especially those made of plastic, do not decompose easily. They can take hundreds of years to break down, contributing to the growing problem of landfill waste. We all know that the production of disposable items also requires significant amounts of non-renewable resources such as oil and natural gas. The energy-intensive process also generates greenhouse gases, intensifying climate change.

It was crucial for us to switch to stainless steel cutlery that would not only align with our environmental goals but also enhance the quality of service we provide, as it offered durability, reusability, and a high standard of hygiene, all of which are critical in the food service industry. Currently, we are serving two million teas and snacks every month across all our food service sites. Now imagine the daily waste generated if we continue to use plastic or paper products. By making this switch, we have drastically reduced the volume of waste generated by our operations, contributing to a healthier planet.

Benefits beyond the Environment

The benefits of using stainless steel cutlery extend far beyond environmental sustainability. First and foremost, it has improved the dining experience for our clients. Stainless steel cutlery adds a touch of elegance and quality to our service, making every meal we serve more enjoyable. Unlike disposable plastic or paper cutlery, which can feel flimsy and uncomfortable, stainless steel provides a superior dining experience that our clients have come to appreciate.

Healthier Choice

Another critical aspect of our decision was the health and safety of our clients. Disposable cutlery, particularly plastic, poses health risks due to the potential leaching of harmful chemicals like BPA (Bisphenol A) and phthalates, which can leach into food and beverages, especially when exposed to heat. By using stainless steel, we have eliminated this risk, ensuring that the food we serve is not only delicious but also safe for consumption. Hygiene is paramount in our operations, and stainless steel cutlery allows us to maintain the highest standards. It can be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, reducing the risk of contamination and ensuring that our clients receive the best possible service.

Cost Efficiency

Additionally, from an operational perspective, the switch has proven to be economically beneficial. While the initial investment in stainless steel cutlery was higher, the long-term savings have been substantial. We no longer face the recurring costs associated with purchasing disposable products, and our waste management expenses have also decreased. This has allowed us and also our clients to reinvest those savings into other areas of our services, further enhancing our offerings.

While disposable products may seem cost-effective in the short term, the long-term environmental and health costs are significant. Governments bear the expense of waste management, environmental cleanup, and healthcare, which ultimately impacts taxpayers.

We always believe that businesses have a responsibility to lead by example, particularly in the face of global environmental challenges. Our shift to stainless steel cutlery shows our commitment to sustainability, quality, and client satisfaction. As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain dedicated to finding innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. We hope that our actions inspire others in the industry to make similar changes, proving that with the right choices, we can all make a difference.
