From First Steps to Steady Strength: Elizabeth’s Journey of Dignity and Growth

Three years ago, the foundation of Elizabeth Mary’s world shifted. Her husband, a skilled carpenter, suffered an accident that forced him out of work, leaving the family’s survival hanging in the balance. For many, such a sudden loss of income would have led to immediate despair. However, Elizabeth found that the weight of this new reality was possible to bear because of a decision she had made years prior: the choice to enter the workforce.

Today, at 44 years old, Elizabeth stands as a Housekeeping Associate with Technique Control Facility Management Pvt. Ltd (TCFM), currently posted at the Embassy Manyata Business Park. Her story is the latest installment in our “Janitor Speaks” column, a series dedicated to revealing the human stories within India’s invisible workforce.

A Foundation Built on Foresight

When Elizabeth first joined TCFM seven years ago, her husband was still earning. Her decision to work was not born of immediate desperation but of a personal desire to contribute to her household and ensure her children received a proper education.

“This was my first job. I decided myself to start working because I wanted to help at home,” Elizabeth reflects. “I am glad that I made this decision. Today, I am a big support to my family”. Because she had already spent years building a steady career, she was not starting from scratch when tragedy struck. She was already standing on her own feet.

Her earnings have not just paid for groceries; they have shaped the milestone moments of her life. Using her Provident Fund (PF) savings, Elizabeth was able to fund her daughter’s wedding. Now a grandmother of two, she looks at her family with a quiet sense of triumph. Her son, inspired by his mother’s tireless work ethic, has recently joined the workforce at D-Mart to assist with the family finances.

The Evolution of an Associate

Elizabeth’s workday begins at 7:00 am. While she started with routine cleaning and hygiene activities, her role has evolved into one of significant technical skill and leadership. Today, she independently manages complex housekeeping machinery and ensures that the rigorous quality and hygiene standards of a high-profile business park are consistently met.

Her growth is a testament to the structured training programs provided by TCFM. These programs allowed her to move beyond manual labor to mastering safety protocols and mechanical efficiency. Now, instead of being the one who needs guidance, she is the one providing it. Elizabeth actively “handholds” new joiners, mentoring them through work processes and ensuring they understand the importance of safety.

Despite her technical proficiency, Elizabeth finds her greatest joy in the simple human interactions her job affords. She prefers working in the reception and lift lobby areas because “it feels cool” and allows her to interact with people.

“I like saying ‘Good morning’,” she says with a smile. “If someone comes, I press the button and help them. I feel happy, happy”.

Overcoming the Invisible Barriers

While Elizabeth moves through her day with grace, she is candid about the internal battles she still faces. She admits to “feeling scared while talking to big people,” a hesitation rooted in her lack of formal education and her inability to speak English.

Yet, in a display of remarkable cognitive agility, she navigates a multilingual environment every day. Elizabeth seamlessly switches between Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada to communicate with her team and the public, proving that dignity and capability are not defined by a single language.

Her confidence has been further bolstered by an environment that treats her as a professional contributor rather than just a laborer. Elizabeth is known for taking ownership of her work. She famously suggested that heavy cleaning of lifts and side-walls be scheduled on weekends to avoid disturbing the tenants during the work week. Her managers didn’t just listen; they implemented her idea.

“I have always been treated with respect and fairness,” Elizabeth says. “Encouragement too has steadily come. This helped me gain in confidence and not refuse to accept greater responsibilities”.

The Steady Strength of Showing Up

Elizabeth’s labor does not end when her shift concludes at 4:00 pm. She returns home to the dual responsibilities of a homemaker, cooking for her family before and after her work hours. With the help of her mother, who assists with household chores, she maintains this delicate balance of being a provider and a caregiver.

She does not use grand words like “success” or “empowerment” to describe her life. Her perspective is grounded in the reality of the everyday. For Elizabeth Mary, the dignity of her journey is summed up in four simple words: “It feels good to earn”.
