Expert advises on Airplane Health Risks & Precautions

Dr Carl Abraham, an infectious disease expert and assistant professor at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, has released essential tips for staying healthy while flying. Despite commercial airplanes having high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter systems that quickly exchange air, the risk of spreading airborne pathogens exists, particularly if a passenger is within two rows of an infected passenger. To mitigate this, Dr Abraham has advised anyone with a respiratory infection or has a weakened immune systems to wear an N95 mask.

He has also highlighted the importance of disinfecting commonly touched objects like seatbelts and trays, even though airlines should clean these areas between flights.

However, the real hotspot for germs is the airplane lavatory. Surfaces can be contaminated by bacteria and viruses like influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and norovirus. To reduce contact with these germs, passengers should use sanitizing wipes on lavatory door handles, use toilet seat covers, and always close the lid before flushing.

Hand hygiene is critical and always wash hands or use hand sanitizer before and after using the restroom and before eating. By following these precautions, passengers can reduce their risk of infection and enjoy safer travels.
