The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is mulling over making it mandatory for all residential complexes to separate bio medical waste from solid waste. The mandatory segregation at source rules is based on non-mixing of wet and dry waste.
Dr Devaki Umesh, Chief Health Officer told Clean India Journal, “We will shortly issue a mandate to all apartments to make sure that they tie up with agencies authorized to collect biomedical waste.”
The BBMP is keen to implement the segregation after bio medical waste generated by a hospital ended up by the road side. It was realized that the waste ferried to the landfills also included biomedical waste generated by residences.
