The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to start sewage water treatment at eight of its dumping grounds, and sell the treated water to malls, multiplexes and other commercial establishments for non-potable use. The BMC will also use the treated water to maintain the greenery in and around dumping grounds, and for other purposes at municipal buildings.
The sewage water will include wastewater from sinks, baths and toilets. This sewage water will undergo a process, which involves screening of water to clear the solid wastes. The grit would be screened and the water would be treated for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) to check the pollutant level in the sewage water. The BMC is planning to sell this treated water for Rs.10 per 1,000litres.
