From Unseen to Essential

Laundry was a dhobi ghat or a domestic washing machine in the corner of a hotel. Housekeeping was manpower, mops and monthly contracts. No SOPs, no measurement, no technology conversation.

That was 20 years ago when cleaning was a backroom activity. Today, that has become the boardroom conversation.

Clean India Show by Clean India Journal

What changed India is the growth of infrastructure and of expectations. The last 20 years have seen an unprecedented boom in commercial real estate, airports, malls, IT parks, gated communities, QSRs and organised retail. Hospitality expanded from five-star luxury to budget, boutique, homestays and service apartments. Healthcare moved from nursing homes to NABH-accredited hospital chains, day-care centres and medical tourism. Manufacturing scaled up to global compliance standards. Every square foot added needed to be cleaned, maintained and kept safe.

With growth came a shift in mindset. Hospitality realised that housekeeping is guest experience. A stained linen or a dusty lobby is a one-star review. Healthcare learnt that laundry is infection control — hence the rapid adoption of barrier washers, colour-coded systems and validated wash processes. The separation of clean and soiled areas is now tender language, not an exception.

In commercial cleaning, clients stopped buying manpower and started buying outcomes — productivity, hygiene, safety, sustainability and technology. That shift professionalised the value chain. Domestic machines gave way to semi-commercial and industrial machines. Manual tools became ergonomic and performance engineered. Mechanised cleaning, robotics, IoT-enabled dispensers, chemical dosing systems, water-efficient laundry and automation entered everyday conversations.

Convenience redefined laundry — pick-up, same-day delivery, app-based tracking — taking retail laundry from zero to over 10,000 organised stores. Facility management moved from a people-and-process model to a people-process-technology-data model. In this journey from unorganised to organised, from unrecognised to indispensable, the industry needed a platform that could connect, educate and create credibility for a fragmented sector.

Clean India Journal played that role. For 20 years, it has been more than a magazine. It has been an educator for a first-time entrepreneur, a reference point for a purchase manager choosing between a domestic and a commercial machine, and a marketplace where a technology provider meets a housekeeping head and a hospital infection-control team.

It brought global practices to Indian context, demystified mechanisation, put sustainability and skilling on the agenda, and gave identity to an industry that did not even feature as an industry in MSME lists. Through its publications and Clean India Expo, it created a community — manufacturers, service providers, distributors, facility managers and end-users — sharing failures, learnings and what next.

If cleaning was once about making places look good, today it is about making people feel safe, healthy and productive. That is the distance the industry has travelled in two score of years.
