Around 74 divisions of the Kochi Corporation have been awarded extra funding for emergency pre-monsoon cleaning this year. A further cash sum will also be awarded as an incentive to the local body that achieves the highest standards of cleaning and hygiene.
The decision to increase funding to each division from र10,000 to र 25,000 was taken at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Mayor Tony Chammany told Clean India Journal, “The cleaning programme for all the divisions have been funded under National Rural Health Mission and Suchitwa Mission, which will ensure cleaning of drains and prevention of vector-borne diseases.”
As part of the campaign, Kudumbashree (local community development workers) will visit households with the aim of educating them about cleanliness and hygiene.
