Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has joined the Centre’s carbon credit program to advance sustainability and financial growth. To maximize the benefits, MC has floated an expression of interest to hire a project management consultant. This consultant will assess the feasibility of various projects for carbon trading, manage carbon credit issuance, and ensure compliance with voluntary carbon mitigation regulations. Officials believe that revenue generated from selling these credits can be reinvested in sustainable infrastructure.
Several ongoing projects are set to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including the bioremediation of legacy waste, centralized municipal solid waste (MSW) processing, and a compressed biogas plant. Additionally, MC is replacing 1.20 lakh halogen streetlights with energy-efficient LED lighting and expanding green belts across the city. The sewage treatment infrastructure is also being upgraded, with 1,700 MLD capacity already installed and more plants in the pipeline.
MC Executive Engineer Balwinder Singh stated that the selected consultant will work on a revenue-sharing model, earning a share from the carbon credits sold in the open market instead of being paid directly. With waste-to-energy projects, LED street lighting, and sewage treatment advancements, Ludhiana aims to strengthen its sustainability initiatives while leveraging carbon trading for long-term urban development.
