The Panaji City Corporation is purchasing three refuge garbage compactors of seven cubic metre capacity in the first phase and additional six compactors in the second phase for transportation and collection of garbage of the city. The purchase of compactors is however subject to availability of funds and phased out over a period of three months. The city as of today generates 60 tonnes of waste daily.
Talking to Clean India Journal on the requirement, Sachin Ambe, Municipal Engineer said, “We already have one refuge compactor for the garbage collection purpose. We have been using vehicles/trucks with hydraulic lifting and unloading sans compaction systems. Considering the requirement, we have revisited the entire system of routing the vehicles and collecting more waste per vehicle to optimise efficiency in the system itself.” The Corporation is in the process of replacing old vehicles which are 10 years old.
The Corporation has specified that the equipment supplier to provide maintenance and service back up locally through its local unit. Besides, the chassis part should be of Tata make, as compaction systems can be fabricated by any one.
