President Pratibha Patil has called for effective waste management of plastics by adopting proper recycling technology. Plastics waste is not waste per se and could be treated as wealth by recycling into value added products.
She called for concerted efforts by the industries and civil society to create awareness about the proper use & disposal of plastic waste and for developing suitable mechanisms for systematic waste collection and recycling.
It is estimated that more than 30-40% of plastic waste generated is recycled into useful products, but this is quite inadequate.
