The World Bank conducted a Sanitation Hackathon (SanHack), a competition to build phone apps to improve sanitation in the developing world. Noting that more people have access to mobiles than sanitation, this competition attracted more than 180 apps. Apps included everything from games to teach children about good hygiene to programs that tracked exactly how much a household spent on sanitation. One of the wining entries was about mapping which allowed users to map their area and upload information about public toilets and sent alerts to concerned authorities in case of breakdowns.
