Trichy Airport Infrastructure Expansion Supports Hygiene

by Clean India Journal Editor
0 comment

With the opening of its new terminal, Tiruchirappalli International Airport has significantly enhanced its capacity and operational efficiency. S. Gnaneswara Rao, Airport Director, highlighted how the airport’s upgraded infrastructure is enabling
better hygiene management without congestion or compromise.

“Hygiene has been central to the terminal’s design,” he said. “We have a higher number of toilets now, strategically located across arrival, departure, and waiting areas. Each unit is inclusive — gents, ladies, PRM, and childcare facilities are all
available in every block.”

The newly expanded terminal at Trichy International Airport has increased the airport’s built-up area from 15,000sqm to 75,000sqm — an expansion by nearly five times. Designed to accommodate rising passenger volumes and streamline operations, the terminal has enhanced the airport’s annual handling capacity from 1.5 million to 4.5 million passengers.

With 60 check-in counters, spacious circulation areas, and five baggage conveyor belts, the new terminal offers a more efficient, accessible, and hygienically manageable environment for both domestic and international travellers.

Currently, the airport handles 40 to 45 flight movements daily, including both domestic and international operations. Despite
this steady volume, hygiene standards remain consistent. “We do not face overcrowding. The facilities have been planned well
in advance and are performing efficiently,” he added.

Facility management services are outsourced and monitored under standardised NIT (Notice Inviting Tender) conditions issued by AAI. “We have not faced any issues with the agency. They are working as per the tender terms, with sufficient manpower and equipment as per AAI’s operational guidelines.”

The airport has also implemented a structured system for solid waste management. An authorised agency handles waste collection, segregation at source, and disposal of both terminal and in-flight waste. While the airport has not yet adopted robotic cleaning systems or real-time digital monitoring tools, current operations are running smoothly with existing resources.

With robust infrastructure, inclusive hygiene facilities, and a clear operational framework, Trichy Airport presents a model
for how regional airports can scale up to meet rising demands without compromising on cleanliness or passenger comfort.

In terms of future upgrades, no immediate changes are being planned. Gnaneshwara Rao reiterated that “with sufficient
infrastructure, cleaning resources, and monitoring in place, there is currently no gap that calls for urgent intervention”.
