The Trinamul-run Cooch Behar municipality has finally decided to execute solid waste management in a synchronized manner to keep the town clean.
“The firm will conduct survey across the town to make an estimate about the garbage, both biodegradable and non-biodegradable, in the next two months. It would then start the service of collecting garbage from each house and commercial building,” said Mr. Bhushan Singh, the Civic Chairman.
For collection of garbage, Re 1 would be cumulated by the firm from each house and the rate for commercial establishments will be decided later, he said.
The private firm will be provided with space on the dumping ground of the civic body, located on the bank of Torsha river, where a plant will be set up for recycling the garbage to produce biogas and organic fertiliser.
“The project would help the civic body as casual workers, who were engaged for conservancy by us, will now work under the firm. The firm will pay their wages. Also, we would be entitled to the sale proceeds of the organic fertiliser while the earnings from biogas will be with the firm,” said Singh.
