The future of cashless laundromats in India looks promising. However, says Akash Dharamsey, MD-ADD Laundry Concepts, “the success will depend on several factors, including technology adoption, digital infrastructure, and customer behaviour.”
Cashless laundromats have gained significant traction worldwide, particularly in developed countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe, where digital payments are widely accepted. These laundromats integrate mobile payments, RFID cards, and contactless transactions, enhancing convenience and security.
In Asia, countries like Japan and South Korea have also embraced cashless laundry services. The success of these laundromats is driven by user convenience, reduced maintenance costs, and improved operational efficiency.
In India, UPI, mobile wallets and contactless payments have become mainstream, making it easier to integrate cashless transactions into laundromats. With more people shifting domicile and living in rental apartments, PGs, co-living spaces, demand for laundromats is growing.
Cashless models enable unattended laundromats, reducing operational costs and making the services more viable. Modern washers and dryers can be linked to mobile applications for remote operation, payment tracking and machine availability updates. With advanced interface, the laundromat owner can remotely view the laundromat performance dashboard giving more insight into the business and conduct data analytics, customer loyalty programs and seasonal marketing activities. With younger generations preferring digital payments over cash, cashless laundromats present a highly attractive business model.
Challenges & Considerations
• Customer Awareness & Cultural Preferences need consideration
• Many Indian consumers are unfamiliar with laundromats, requiring awareness-building efforts
• Automated, payment-enabled machines are more expensive than traditional setups
• Unattended laundromats need strong service support and remote monitoring to avoid disruptions
• Seamless UPI integration, cybersecurity, and technology adoption are crucial for success.
Various business models for laundromats are being tried and tested and will evolve over the years. One thing is for sure, cashless laundromats have significant potential in India and over the next decade the presence of cashless laundromats will be well accepted and widespread.
