EPEAT becomes operative in India

As a sequel to the Green Electronics Council (GEC), Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) has become operative in India as the electronics companies including television, personal computer and imaging equipment manufacturer have started applying for “EPEAT rating.”

EPEAT, a global body to ensure sustainability and reduce ecological impact, rates electronic products on a life cycle basis thus devising elimination of toxic substances, use of recycled and recyclable materials, product design for recycling, product longevity and energy efficiency.

According to GEC rules, to qualify for EPEAT, a product must meet 23 to 33 required environmental performance criteria depending on the product category.

India, spending $9.5 billion on computing hardware alone last year, became 43rd country to have EPEAT. Manufacturers register their products in EPEAT on a country-by-country basis to ensure all product and service criteria are supported and verified for local markets. The information provided by EPEAT will enable purchasers to select only the eco-friendly electronic products.
