With cleaning functions increasingly being outsourced, the service industry holds a huge potential, but there is much to be done to create awareness about the cleaning profession, says Pradeep Mehra who has recently taken over as CMD of Delhi-based Walsons Integrated Solution, a division of Walson’s HR Solutions Pvt Ltd.

Given the vast experience in the cleaning industry, what are the issues you have confronted with in relation to the client and workers?
Lack of adequate awareness about cleaning and hygiene in the society and a large portion of the industry being unorganised are hampering the industry’s growth.
Another problem plaguing the cleaning industry in India is the paucity of skilled workers. The standards of training are yet to be formalised. Till we do not create awareness about and respect towards the cleaning profession, whatever modules we introduce will not yield dividends in terms of utility.
How do we create awareness?
Awareness about the cleaning industry can be generated through concerted actions, advertisements, exhibitions, journals focused on the cleaning & hygiene industry and seminars. Media can play a very big role.
What are your plans for your company?
Walsons Integrated Solutions offers comprehensive and integrated facility management solutions across the country and caters to a diverse customer base. Walsons provides premium quality services throughout India for MNCs, large Indian corporates and public sector companies by adopting and transferring best practices of the service industry. We have a pan India presence covering 180 cities through 17 regional and branch offices.
What are the services offered?
The services are offered stand-alone or integrated to provide total facility management solutions. To solve the challenge of delivering tailor-made solutions to the mixed base of customers, WIS has organised its operations on a flat structure, supported by a vertical structure. The services we provide include soft services, telecom and metre reading services, chauffeur services and specialised corporate services.
Training?
We believe that training is the backbone of our service strength. All our employees are constantly trained on latest techniques, safety at work place and basic courtesy. Training is monitored centrally and a team of trainers move across our client’s location to impart training. Training need is accessed through a training audit process which is continuous in nature.
