How often do we pay attention to the cleaning services at railway coaches? We usually take Janitors’ work for granted at public places, but at times they play the role of vigilance securing the lives of many people.
On August 15, Raju Shivkumar Kanojia, a Eureka Forbes’ janitor, found 22 live bullets while cleaning a train at Andheri yard. The Forbes’ team of seven members started cleaning the local train after it entered the yard at 8pm. It is then, Raju Kanojia noticed an abandoned box wrapped in a plastic bag under the seat in one of the compartments. On a closer look he realized it had bullets. “We usually find bags and other stuff in trains which we hand over to the Government Railway Police. That evening when I found the box beneath the seat, I informed my supervisor, Subhas Sitaram Gorad immediately,” said Raju. The Andheri GRP has recorded an entry about the abandoned box and is looking for its owner.
With 2.68 billion annual commuters, Mumbai suburban railways handle the busiest traffic in the world. Such small steps might save the lives of thousands. After the incident, to keep up the motivation levels, Eureka Forbes awarded a watch to Raju. Parvez Gaibi, BDM, Eureka Forbes told CIJ, “We provide periodic training to our janitors to maintain the high standards which are scrutinized and rated by railway officials. The training differs based on the type of cleaning and equipment to be used. Having got points from six to nine, these workers have done a fabulous job, and this is just a proof of that.”
