The laws amended under the ongoing garbage-free Kerala campaign attract a maximum fine of Rs 50,000/- and imprisonment of up to one year.
The secretary for the Local Self Government has been empowered to enforce strict measures by imposing fines after hearing the violators by giving notice. The amendment has increased the responsibilities of waste generators to pay heed to potential environmental and public health damage and strengthen the sustainable future of the State. Owners and shopkeepers must take up the onus of keeping their premises clean. Local bodies can utilize funds collected as fines, sponsorships, and others deposited into the Waste Management Fund for waste-related activities and increase productivity.
