After E-ward (Byculla) and T-ward (Mulund), it is now the turn of P/south ward (Goregaon) of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to ban plastic bags.
Speaking to CIJ, Bhagyashri Kapse, Asst Commissioner P/South Ward says, “We are levying fines on shops which are selling plastic bags. During a recent raid, we collected र11,000 and confiscated 20kg of plastic bags below 50 microns from 647 shops. One of the major problems, the municipal corporation faces in P/South ward is the plastic bags and garbage clogging open drains or nullahs. The slumdwellers throw garbage in to the nullahs. Even though we have evacuated them and repeatedly fined them, the sitruation is not improving. The ward has also water-logging problem in the low-lying areas. There is a need for awareness and support from people.”
