The 32-Year Journey of Gopal Singh From Phenol to Professionalism

In the bustling world of facility management, where ‘clean’ is often a baseline expectation rather than a celebrated achievement, there are individuals whose life stories transform manual labour into a masterclass of dignity and perseverance. Meet Gopal Singh, a man whose hands have scrubbed the floors of India’s Parliament House and major corporate hubs for over three decades. Today, as a supervisor at PSM Facility, Greater Delhi, Gopal’s story is being featured in Clean India Journal not just for his expertise with chemicals and machines, but for the heart he pours into a profession that is often invisible to the public eye

Gopal’s journey began in 1976, and by the early 90s, he was already navigating the workforce. His first job was in a small hotel in Connaught Place, earning a mere Rs. 900 per month cleaning plates and cutting vegetables. From these humble beginnings, he moved to Thapar House as an office boy, eventually finding his true calling in the specialized world of housekeeping.

For Gopal, housekeeping was never just about a paycheck; it was a vehicle for his family’s dreams. Alongside his wife, who also works as a housekeeping executive, Gopal spent years working double shifts.

“When my children were young, we worked at 2 or 3 in the night. I used to part-time as a waiter while my wife did housekeeping. We earned enough to give our children an education and today we are fine,” Gopal recalls with pride.

This relentless work ethic paid off. Despite having no formal education himself — unable to read or write much Hindi — Gopal ensured his three sons and one daughter received the opportunities he never had. One of his children now serves as a Sales Head, a testament to the fact that the floors Gopal cleaned were actually the foundation for his family’s upward mobility.

The Evolution

Having spent 32 years in the industry, Gopal is a living bridge between the old ways and the new. He remembers a time when cleaning was primitive, relying on muscle and basic phenol. Today, he speaks with the authority of a technician about the specialized chemicals and machinery that define modern sanitation.

Despite the advancements, Gopal believes the core of the job remains the same: attention to detail. “Our floor is the most important. If it is clean, everything is clean. And the main door. If it is clean, everything is clean,” he explains.

R2 & R3: Used for floor and glass maintenance.

R6: Specifically for heavy-duty toilet cleaning.

Single-Disc Machines: Gopal advocates for technology, noting that single-disc hand machines make work faster and less physically draining while delivering superior results.

Human Touch

Gopal’s current employer, Maneesha Matta, saw something in him that transcended a standard resume. When he first applied for a simple housekeeper role, she was so moved by his story and his ability to educate his children that she immediately promoted him to a Supervisor role.

Maneesha highlights three distinct abilities that make Gopal an invaluable asset to her team:

1.   Results-Oriented Accountability: “Whatever responsibility we give to Gopal, by hook or by crook, he gives the result in the evening,” she shares. He is a man of his word who follows through on every task until it is perfect.

2.   Exceptional Family Values: Maneesha was deeply impressed by his commitment to his family, noting that his lack of education did not stop him from making his children capable and successful.

3.   Empathetic Leadership: In an industry where supervisors can often be harsh, Gopal leads his team of 18 with “love” and enthusiasm. Maneesha notes, “He does not talk to any worker in bad words… he has maintained that protocol”.

Life Lessons

Gopal Singh’s philosophy is simple: Work like you are cleaning your own home. Whether he is managing deep cleaning for massive airport projects or rectifying a stain that a client pointed out, he views every challenge as a learning opportunity.

“A person can learn anything as long as he is alive,” Gopal says. At 50 years of age, he continues to show up every day, never taking a day off, and treating his 17-18 team members with the same respect he wishes to receive.

His message to the industry is clear: technology and chemicals are vital, but it is the dignity of the worker and the integrity of the results that truly define a clean environment. As his story reaches the readers of the Clean India Journal, Gopal Singh stands as a reminder that every polished floor and sparkling glass pane is a reflection of a human life dedicated to excellence.
