Recently concluded 102nd Indian Science Congress had a two-hour long “clean India” session to turn the ‘awful’ toilet experience to the ‘awesome’ toilet experience en route a Swachh Bharat. Chaired by scientist R A Mashelkar, the session highlighted the different aspects of the campaign Psychology and Technology for Cleaner India to introducing a banking system whereby people could deposit money at the community toilets and receive surprise gifts as incentives for people to use the community toilets. Among the speakers were Sudheendra Kulkarni, chairman of the Observor Research Foundation, Rajeev Kher, CEO of 3S & Sara Plast Pvt Ltd, Pradeep Lokhande, Founder, Rural relations, and Swapnil Chaturvedi, CEO, Samgra and Uday Salunkhe, group director of L N Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research.
In his address to the Congress in Mumbai, Prime Minister Modi said more resilient agriculture, appropriate and affordable technologies for rural areas, improving healthcare, making clean technology affordable, and making India a leading manufacturing nation and a hub for knowledge and technology-intensive industries, were some of the key objectives before Indian scientists.
