The New Housekeeping Mandate — Cost Centre to Performance Driver

Housekeeping in hotels is in the middle of a structural reset. Rising compliance demands, labour shortages, tightening budgets, and an urgent push towards measurable sustainability have altered the very foundation of how the department operates. Daily routines that were once considered standard practice—chemical use, linen handling, room turnaround, waste flow management, procurement choices—are all being re-examined under tougher performance expectations and sharper scrutiny from owners, brands, and guests alike.

In this Part I of the special report, Prabhat Shukla, InterContinental Doha The City; Rajesh Pandey, Radisson Blu Gorakhpur; Kasturi Deo, Tamara Leisure Experience and Bhimrao Dhoble, IHG Greater Noida share perspectives that reflect this shift on the ground. Together, they illustrate how housekeeping has become a balancing act: maintaining impeccable hygiene standards while transitioning to low-impact chemistries; reducing water, energy and plastic consumption without compromising guest experience; and delivering consistent service despite shrinking manpower and increasing workloads.

What emerges from their collective insights is a clear industry pattern. Sustainability is no longer an initiative — it is embedded into SOPs. Chemical dispensing accuracy, microfiber adoption, dispenser-based amenities, structured waste segregation, and linen lifecycle management have moved from “good practice” to “operational requirement”. At the same time, the profession is grappling with diminishing interest from new entrants, wage disparity, and the widespread misconception that housekeeping is merely a cleaning function.

This feature brings together voices from four different operational environments, presenting an honest and unfiltered picture of what housekeeping teams are dealing with today and what must change if hotels expect to maintain standards, retain talent, and meet evolving sustainability mandates.
