The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) ‘Skill Development Programme, which commenced in Delhi last year, has now expanded to Mumbai. The programme started in association with Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and industry partners Roots and Karcher, has trained 10 batches of youth who are now placed with different FM companies.
The training of a new batch in Mumbai at the Bosco Boys Home, Mumbai, commenced in August. In its mandate, the not-for-profit vocational training programme aims at training youth from the marginalized sections of the society and raise awareness about rights of the workers and women’s rights in the cleaning sector as a whole. The objective is to create a pool of skilled youth who would efficiently and effectively use hardware available in the sector to perform professional cleaning services; thus catering to the growing need and demand for skilled manpower in this industry.
Explaining about the growing demand for skilled manpower, Peter Hug, MD-VDMA Cleaning Systems, said, “This is a scalable programme. We have two schools in Delhi, now one in Mumbai and the next will be in Bangalore and Hyderabad. There is need for more and we have plans to improve our mobilization and penetrate into the Tier II and satellite cities to attract people from the country side to join the training schools.”
Speaking during the launch, Jayaram Nair, Chairman-Virtual Info Systems Pvt Ltd, commended Peter Hug for the good work. “In the recent past, there is a change in attitude towards cleanliness itself, more and more youngster are taking up the cleaning business and at a time when the new government has initiated the cleanliness drive, it is time for the cleaning industry to rise to this change and be a part of the change.”
The launch was well attended by Dr Peter Hug, MD, VDMA Cleaning Systems, Rev. Fr. Anthony Santarita, SDB, Jamly John, VDMA India- Regional Manager (Western Region) besides facility management companies including ISS, Forbes Facility, Compass, Kaariya and Krystal among others.
