Garbage disposal, no doubt is a major problem with almost every city of India but Goa faces with the pressing issue of odour besides disposal. Even though it has introduced four-bin system, the wet waste collected emit foul smell, generating out of fish waste, before it is cleared by the Corporation vehicles for disposal. Fish being a staple diet of Goa, it forms a major part of 300 tonnes of garbage collected every day. Voicing concern over and seeking solutions, Patricia Pinto, an Environmentalist working closely with the City Corporation of Panaji, said, “We need to address the issue immediately as the odour is unbearable. We are now making successful efforts in segregating waste at source. The dry and plastic waste is separated and sent to the recently installed unit for crushing and pressing it into cubes. These cubes are collected by ACC for recycling on a daily basis.”
