Children living in Janaka Devi slums, transformed the dirty and dull walls into an art piece. A big nullah has been cleaned which was filled with garbage and the overflowing garbage in dustbins have been picked. The transformation took place after the children and youngsters attended a summer camp and learnt the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. They have now become emissaries of change.
Around 200 children from more than 1,000 houses painted the walls in two days. The walls have a social message or are showcase the children’s talent. “Initially, we held a summer camp where children were taught to dance, act and paint. Their eagerness in painting gave us the idea to let their creativity flow,” said Kasber Augustine, member of Thane Citizens’ Forum (TCF). Looking at the efforts of the residents, the Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) sanitation department has started collecting garbage from every house.
