The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has launched a green sanitation initiative. It is constructing modern, solar-powered public toilets across the city. This project will cost ₹4.13 crore.
Rooftop solar panels will meet the electricity requirements of the units. This technology will also reduce overall operational costs. Additionally, the eco-friendly structures will feature rainwater harvesting systems and proper ventilation.
Some of the locations where the work has already been initiated, include Sector 5 and Sector 14. Officials have also identified several other sectors and busy market areas for this initiative.
Gurugram currently has 133 public toilets. The civic body spends nearly ₹15 lakh annually on their maintenance. However, residents have repeatedly raised concerns over unhygienic conditions. Many existing public toilets suffer from poor upkeep, broken fittings and lack of water supply. The new solar-powered project aims to address these issues directly.
The new blocks will have separate sections for men, women and differently abled users. They will include modern amenities like liquid soap dispensers and hand dryers. Sanitary vending machines and improved lighting systems will also be installed. Furthermore, the units will feature smart monitoring systems, fire extinguishers and digital feedback mechanisms.
Under this plan, authorities propose to upgrade or redevelop nearly 130 community and public toilets across Gurugram.
