In a recent move, the Bombay High Court has instructed every municipal corporation in Maharashtra to devise a policy to build toilets for women near main roads by March 31.
The court has also stated the need for involving NGOs working in the field to take initiative and responsibility of making periodic visits to ensure cleanliness and maintenance. In this regard, the judges have asked the corporations to make budgetary provisions for maintenance and cleanliness.
The court ruling came after a PIL stating that several working women find it difficult to use existing toilets because these are unclean. The BMC has so far identified 96 places along the highways for building toilets.
