Veolia, a France-based water treatment company, has entered nuclear waste cleaning sector of Japan through its acquisition of USbased company Kurion, an expert in nuclear waste handling. The company foresees significant growth in the nuclear waste cleaning market across the globe. Subsequent to the acquisition, both companies are planning to offer a comprehensive array of technologies and services in this sector. Initially, Veolia will focus on low emission radioactive waste.
According to an estimate, the global market for hazardous waste is projected to be about US$200 billion between the years 2012 and 2030. This provides an opportunity in low-emission radio-active waste disposal businesses. The strategic move by Veolia is also in purview of decommissioning of old nuclear plants within next 30 years.
