The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has purchased 11 high-tech compactors, each having a capacity of 14 cubic metres, for this purpose. They have been deployed in all its 31 wards. The GMC’s area of operation extends 216km.
According to GMC sources, compactors are powered by hydraulics and can dispose of a larger volume of garbage. The MSW are now being collected from the household in the morning, stored in bins and subsequently put into compactors.
The GMC purchased compactors after massive public outcry over the city’s poor waste management and overflowing of garbage in urban areas.
