The Railway Budget of 2012-13 has included the formation of a special cleaning body to take care of in the trains and the stations. In a recent press note, Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi admitted that the standards of cleanliness at stations need to be improved. The first move in this direction has been taken by the Pune railway station.
Speaking to Clean India Journal, YK Singh, PRO of Central Railway (Pune Division) said, “On an average day, the Pune railway station sees traffic of 104 mail, express and passenger trains and 42 local trains. We have mechanised cleaning equipment and engage cleaning contractors to maintain the railway station premises and even the tracks on a regular basis. But people have to cooperate to keep the platforms clean. They believe that it is the job of safaiwala to maintain the station. A station can be maintained only with cooperation from railway staff and passengers.”
