ThreadUp buys and sells second-hand clothing, including a ‘Clean Out Bag’ option, aimed at reducing fashion waste, increasing the lifespan of items through resale, reuse and recycling. It deals with over 55,000 brands which sell for up to 90% of the estimated retail price and is attempting to create a sustainable fashion future by helping users clean out instead of throwing out. Launched in 2009, the first distribution centre opened at Mechanicsburg (Pennsylvania) in 2011.
The process starts with an order placed for a free ‘Clean Out Bag’ for picking up used and discarded clothes. These clothes could be dropped off at a FedEx, UPS location for a free shipping. The process involves 12-point inspection on every piece of clothing, right from assessing the apparel for its quality standards, getting them photographed and listed. Sold discarded clothes are transported by ThreadUp to the buyer. The clothes owner gets cash or shopping credit for brands like Kate Spade, Torrid, Hollister.
