EU bans mango, vegetable import from India

The European Union has imposed a ban on import of mango and other vegetables, including aubergines, bitter gourd, snake gourd. patra leaves, taro plants and eggplant from India from May 1, 2014 as they were found to carrying pests, insects and fruit flies.

Laboratory testing has revealed that insect “tobacco white fly” has found in the vegetables and fruits imported from India. The EU said the potential ‘introduction of new pests in to the EU region’ could threaten long-term agricultural production.

The EU feared these pests could destroy England’s £321 million salad crop industry of tomato and cucumber crops.

The EU has also just announced banning of the sale and import of those apples from USA that are coated with Diphenylamine (DPA), a highly carcinogenic pesticide.
